Back-to-Back State Champs! PeeWee AA ![]() Grosse Ile Islanders Pee Wee AA won the 2013 State Championship in Canton, defeating the Farmington Flames 5-2. This is back-to-back State Championships for this group of players. Congratulations! Summer Skills Camps at Trenton: Downriver Hockey Academy Downriver Hockey Academy summer programs will be starting at the Kennedy Recreation Center in Trenton the week of June 15. GIHA Coach Kirk Gurney is the owner and instructional director of DHA. This is an outstanding resource to have at our home rink. Kirk has designed each summer program to provide a balance of hockey training. The on- and off-ice combination is diverse and gives players the tools they need to improve their game. DHA's instructor-to-player ratio is five to one and allows for more personal attention. Each instructor has played at the junior, college or pro level and is highly skilled. The on-ice program includes edge work, skating, quick feet, puck handling, shooting, quick starts, fakes and more. The off-ice program includes strength/conditioning, quick feet, explosiveness, puck handling, fakes, shooting, agility, stride mechanics and more. DHA also has Downriver's only skating treadmill, which is a valuable tool for developing stride mechanics. Kirk also plans to add a speed ramp for quick explosive starts and 800 square feet of synthetic ice for shooting.
